Would you ...
... name your pet "the pet"?
Would you ...
... name your child "the child"?
Would you ...
... name your boat "the boat"?
Then why ...
... do we call our moon "the moon"?
When we disrepect that which is close to us, we disrepect ourselves.
When we neglect a name, we neglect how Fate Herself may call upon us.
-Confucious
You see it almost every day of your life: the moon. It is responsible for the tides, provides light during the nighttime, it has been a source of wonder and admiration for all humankind. Doesn't it deserve a proper name?
We have named the moons of other planets, Mars has Phobos and Deimos, Jupiter has Ganymede, Callisto, Io, Europa, and more, the list goes on - hundreds of moons across the SOLAR SYSTEM have names, but our own moon, the closet celestial body in our sky, has none.
Some people think the moon's official name is Luna, but this is not the case. The International Astronomical Union (IAU) only recognizes "moon".
This is not right!
We hereby formally request that the IAU revisits its resolution to provide a proper name for the Earth's only natural satellite.
